Creative
wins US patent for MP3 player interface Channel News Asia - Singapore
SINGAPORE : Creative Technology has been awarded the "Zen" patent in the
US, giving it a much-needed boost in the battle for supremacy in the MP3 player
market.
The patent is for Creative's invention of the user interface for portable media
players.
It is found in Creative's MP3 players and could also be found in some competing
players, such as the Apple iPod and iPod mini.
Creative said the patent covers the way music tracks are selected on a device
using a hierarchy of three or more successive screens.
"The first portable media player based upon the user interface covered in our
Zen Patent was our NOMAD Jukebox MP3 player," said Sim Wong Hoo, chairman and
CEO of Creative, in a statement.Write Comment (0 Comments) |

Podcasters
make easy listening Financial Times -
London,England,UK
As in cities caround the world, the white headphones of the iPod are a
common sight among Chicago commuters. What has changed for Chicago’s travellers
in the last month, however, is what they can listen to. For those feeling like
they miss out on a bit of local knowledge by not being able to watch the city’s
popular ABC-owned WLS television station during the day, there is now help at
hand. They can listen to the latest television features on their iPods, Apple’s
hugely popular audio devices.
“These people are still overwhelmingly listening to music. But this can get
boring and increasingly they are uploading all kinds of other content on to
their iPods,” says Emily Barr, president and general manager of WLS TV. The
Chicago station broadcasts five and a half hours of news a day, including
features on organic city farming and urban beekeepers. Some of this is
repackaged into podcasts, the easily downloadable audio files that can be
listened to on iPods or other rival players. This is a relatively simple and
cheap exercise given that all the station’s content is already in digital form.
“Chicago’s commuters know the names of our reporters. Podcasts provide another
way to experience us when you are not watching TV,” Ms Barr says.Write Comment (0 Comments) |

Artist
takes a bite out of Apple Guardian
Unlimited - UK
It could be the solution for anyone trying to give up their iPod. A
surrogate mp3 player carved out of wood has been created by a Dutch artist to
mark a new exhibition featuring bronze laptops filled with genetically modified
grain.
The artist, known only as Pii, claimed that his "PiiPod" solves the problem of
mp3-related muggings and the risk of deafness by being "specially designed to be
unable to play music and sound files". Crucially, however, the recycled wooden
device still delivers an iPod-style "fix" by producing a bulge the size of a
personal music player in the carrier's pocket.Write Comment (0 Comments) |
