The MP3 player has emerged as one of the most popular
new consumer electronics products. The first MP3 players equipped with hard disk
drives (HDDs) were built around 2.5-inch drives. These players were bulky and
were not sufficiently tough for the handheld environment. Early units suffered
quality problems with their LCDs and consequently the market was slow to take
