Podcasting
The Night Away Forbes -
USA
NEW YORK - A lot of people are buzzing about Podcasting of late. I'm not one of
them. At least not yet.
In case you've missed this latest tech trend, Postcasting is what you get when
you combine blogging--do I still need to explain what that is?--with Internet
radio.
If you were a Podcaster, here is what you might do: Using a microphone connected
to your computer, you would record your own radio-style program. Perhaps you
fancy yourself a budding Rush Limbaugh or Casey Kasem. Whatever the reason,
you'd record your program, clean it up in a sound-editing program, such as the
freely available Audacity, and then export the final product as an MP3 file.
This MP3 file can then be downloaded by anyone, to be played on an Apple
Computer (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) iPod or whatever MP3 player they happen
to be using, once you publish it on the Web. But if this show of yours is going
to be a regular thing, then you're going to need a way to let your audience know
when a new show is ready for download.
This is where Podcasting comes in. If you read a lot of blogs, then perhaps
you're familiar with Really Simple Syndication, which can speed up your Web
browsing if you're the type who reads a lot of sites on a regular basis. I've
covered them here before (see: "The Coming RSS Revolution") and we offer several
RSS feeds here at Forbes.com.
