snares endorsement for MP3 players USA Today - USA
Olympic multiple gold medalist Michael Phelps has his first
post-Olympic endorsement deal.
The champion swimmer, known to prepare by wearing music-blaring earphones while
waiting to hit the pool for his next event, signed with an oh-so-appropriate
sponsor: a maker of MP3 digital music players.
No, it's not Apple iPods.
Today, Matsunichi — a little-known Hong Kong-based consumer electronics company
eager to expand in Asia and Europe and enter the U.S. market — will announce
that it has signed Phelps to be its chief spokesman for the next four years.
That means he'll make TV commercials and do personal appearances worldwide.
Although the size of the contract — which runs through the 2008 Olympic Games in
Beijing — was not disclosed, sports marketing executives estimate it could
exceed $4 million over the four years. That would rank it among the largest
deals signed by an Olympic athlete.
