LGT takes low-cost approach to MP3 phones Korea Heral, South Korea
LG Telecom Ltd., Korea's smallest mobile-phone operator, released a new MP3
player-equipped handset yesterday that is considerably cheaper than rival
models.
The modestly featured LT7000, which hit the shelves Tuesday, allows 75 megabytes
of music storage, enough to carry about 18 songs recorded at a bit rate of
128kbps, and also comes with a 320,000-pixel digital camera.
The LT7000, developed by Japan's Toshiba Corp., is priced at 363,000 won ($361),
cheaper than conventional MP3 player-equipped phones that are sold for around
500,000 to 600,000 won.
"The customer range of MP3 phones is quickly spreading to people in their 30s
and 40s, groups that are more cost conscious than others. The LT7000 is already
a proven model in the market as Toshiba sold more than 500,000 units in North
America last year," said Kwon Yong-hoon from LG Telecom's handset development
team.
LG Telecom, which markets 11 handset models with digital music functionality,
sold around 550,000 MP3 player-equipped phones since delivering its first, the
LG-LP3000, in April last year. The company plans to install digital music
players in 80 percent of the handsets to be released in 2005.
