Electronics manufacturers angry over proposed surcharge on MP3 ... DMeurope.com, Netherlands
Consumer electronics companies, such as Apple, Sony and Philips, are up in arms
over a proposed surcharge on mp3 players sold in the Netherlands to compensate
copyright holders for lost revenue due to copies of their content made for
personal consumption.
The Stichting Thuiskopie foundation, which successfully lobbied for a surcharge
(‘thuiskopievergoeding’) on blank CDs and DVDs - which it collects quarterly and
distributes to copyright holders, as well as various cultural charities - is now
proposing a similar charge on mp3 players, according to Bernd Taselaar of ICT
Office, a Dutch trade association.
As the content is not stored on removable storage media but in the mp3 player’s
built-in memory or on its hard disk, the proposed surcharge will be based on the
amount of storage - at €3.28 per gigabyte - a player offers.
