Company offering literature for the ears faces new challenges philly.com, PA
NEWARK, N.J. - While she works, Mary Lou Kalbow likes to listen to books by
Janet Evanovich, Jonathan Kellerman and James Patterson on her portable MP3
player.
Call it the modern-day version of books on tapes. A growing number of book
enthusiasts like Kalbow are downloading their favorite authors onto their MP3
players and i-Pods.
"I like to be entertained. Mystery, action, a love story. Something that keeps
me on the edge of my seat," said Kalbow, 52, a massage therapist who started
listening to books while driving a five-hour rural postal route in Minnesota
about five years ago.
Kalbow downloads her books through Audible Inc., a pioneer in the listenable
literature business for years. While sales are still strong, Audible could soon
face stiff competition from larger Web-based companies, including Amazon.com, a
former business partner that plans to launch its own audio book store.
