Finally, Apple's iTunes arrives
Australian, Australia
Sometime in the next few weeks, Apple Computer will finally unveil the local
version of its hugely successful iTunes website.
It's been a long wait; iTunes launched mid-2003 in the US.
The local version is likely to set a rocket under demand for digital music
downloads and help shape the sector for years to come.
When it launched - after a lengthy delay - in Europe last year the iTunes site
shot to number one.
Music sales in Australia are about $1 billion a year, but less than 0.01 per
cent of sales are online. In the US, where iTunes has been in operation for two
years, it is 2 per cent and rising.
But, far from being worried about the marquee name in digital music arriving,
iTunes competitors are almost begging for the Australian site to be unveiled.
Yesterday, the head of Telstra's BigPond internet arm, Justin Milne issued this
plea: "BigPond Music is as eager as everyone else to see them launch in
Australia. It will be good for the legal music download industry as a whole
because the more competition, the better."
